Species list
What Fish Can Live With Cherry Shrimp? (Safe vs Unsafe)
Species list
Cherry shrimp thrive with calm nano fish that ignore adults. The real risk is copper meds, hungry mouths at shrimplet size, and oversized “community” fish. Use this list before mixing livestock.

- Shrimp-safe fish
- No copper
- Moss cover
- Nano community
Quick facts
| Best tank | Cycled planted 20 L+ with moss and hardscape caves |
|---|---|
| Safe fish size | Mouth too small to swallow adult Neocaridina |
| Copper | Zero — no ich meds with copper in shrimp tanks |
| Shrimplets | Most fish eat fry; moss + Java fern increase survival |
| Filter | Sponge or prefilter sponge on intake |
| Difficulty | Beginner if shrimp-only; intermediate with fish |
Overview
Usually safe (adult cherry shrimp): neon tetras (6+), ember tetras, chili/phoenix rasboras, Otocinclus in a mature tank, pygmy corydoras, celestial pearl danios, small ramshorn/nerite snails, and Amano shrimp (they will not hybridize).
Maybe / risky: bettas (some hunt, some ignore — never a guarantee), guppies (may nip or eat fry), honey gourami (usually ok, still opportunistic), endlers. Watch for 2 weeks before calling it safe.
Avoid: goldfish, most cichlids (including angels), pea puffers, large barbs, Oscars, crayfish, and any fish sold as “shrimp eaters.” Full shrimp husbandry: cherry shrimp care guide. Build the tank from Budget 50 shrimp before adding fish.
How to mix fish and shrimp safely
-
Step 1
Cycle fully, then add shrimp first
Zero ammonia/nitrite, biofilm present. Add 10+ shrimp and let them breed 4–6 weeks before any fish. Fishless cycling is safer than fish-in.
-
Step 2
Plant heavy cover
Java moss, Anubias, and fern create fry hideouts. Glue moss to wood — see Java moss and Anubias guides.
-
Step 3
Add one small school only
Start with six neons or embers — not three species at once. Check stocking math. Observe shrimp behavior at feeding time.
-
Step 4
Feed sinking shrimp food + tiny fish portions
Hikari shrimp cuisine or similar on a dish; fish flakes in amounts finished in under a minute. Leftovers spike ammonia.
-
Step 5
Ban copper forever in this tank
Treat ich in a hospital tank. Many “all-in-one” meds kill invertebrates in hours.
Common problems
Adult shrimp disappearing overnight
Why: Fish large enough to swallow them, or jumping without a lid.
Fix: Rehome the predator; add a tight lid; recount after lights-out with a torch.
Colony never grows
Why: Fish eat every shrimplet; or GH/molting failure.
Fix: Add denser moss; pause fish feeding one day/week; check minerals. See cherry shrimp molting notes.
Shrimp on glass, gasping, after medication
Why: Copper or high organics after treatment.
Fix: Huge water change with conditioner; carbon if labeled safe; never repeat copper in this tank.
Betta flaring at shrimp constantly
Why: Individual personality — some bettas hunt invertebrates.
Fix: Move the betta. Do not “wait it out” if shrimp are being struck.
Quick pairing notes
- Shrimp-only — fastest colony growth; still add snails/otos only if biofilm is rich.
- Otos + shrimp — great algae crew; otos need a mature tank first.
- Neon school + shrimp — classic look; expect some fry loss.
- Plants: Java moss, Anubias, beginner plant list.

FAQ
Can neon tetras live with cherry shrimp?
Yes in planted tanks. Adults are usually ignored; newly hatched shrimplets may be eaten.
Can a betta live with cherry shrimp?
Sometimes. Many bettas hunt shrimp. Only try in a heavily planted tank and be ready to separate.
Will otocinclus eat shrimp?
No. Otos graze biofilm. They are among the safest fish companions if the tank is mature.
What fish should never go with shrimp?
Goldfish, pea puffers, most cichlids, large barbs, crayfish, and any species marketed to eat shrimp.
Do I need a sponge filter for shrimp + fish?
A sponge or prefilter sponge stops shrimp from being sucked into intakes. Gentle flow also helps otos.
Will Amano shrimp breed with cherry shrimp?
No — different genera. They compete a bit for food; feed enough sinking food for both.
