Experience using CO2 diffusers in aquascaping

1 - Experience using CO2 diffusers in aquascaping - Aqua Plants HubI’m sure all of you are well aware of the function and importance of CO2 in aquariums, but today we would like to share some experiences on how to use CO2 effectively in aquariums with a CO2 electric valve.

What is a CO2 electric valve?

A CO2 electric valve is a device that automatically controls the cutting off and releasing of CO2 gas based on changes in electrical current.

Currently, there are many types of CO2 electric valves on the market, some expensive and some affordable. The price of a regular one ranges from about 120-180k, and it can go up to several million VND if you use a valve from a brand specialized for aquascaping.

In addition, CO2 electric valves come in various types suitable for different power sources, such as valves for 220V, 24V, or 12V. However, we recommend using a 12V power source for safety, as aquariums contain a lot of water and have complex electrical systems; using 220V can easily cause electric shocks if there is a leak.

How to connect a CO2 electric valve:

Behind the main CO2 valve, you usually place a pressure reducer or a fine-tuning valve. If you use a regular fine-tuning valve, it will be very difficult to connect the electric valve.

Therefore, we recommend that you use a pressure reducer with a gauge. Although it may cost twice as much, around 200-250k each, it is very convenient if you connect it with the electric valve.

Currently, there are many ways to connect valves:

One way to connect is to attach the electric valve behind the fine-tuning screw of the pressure reducer, which will still operate normally when powered on. However, during the power-off process, CO2 gas will continue to be released through the fine-tuning valve, resulting in a certain amount of CO2 being compressed between the fine-tuning valve and the electric valve (which has been turned off). When the power is turned back on, the compressed CO2 in this position is released all at once, often causing the drop checker or CO2 cup to break.

To fix this, you should remove the CO2 fine-tuning part and install the electric valve before that. This will prevent CO2 from being compressed in this section anymore. However, if you want to install it this way, your CO2 electric valve must be able to withstand high pressure (but don’t worry, the gauge valve already has a pressure reducer). So when buying a valve, remember to ask the seller about this characteristic to avoid buying one that cannot be used.

Some notes: The electric valve uses electromagnetic force to open and close the valve, generating heat from inside the valve, so you should check if the valve gets too hot. Usually, it will feel warm to the touch; however, if it gets too hot, you should consider repositioning it or replacing it, as it may affect other equipment!

The function of the electric valve in aquariums:

Synchronizing with the lighting system and timer, the electric valve helps maintain an automatic state of providing essential elements for the aquarium. When the timer turns on, the lights and CO2 automatically activate, allowing plants to photosynthesize more effectively. Additionally, properly controlling the release of CO2 helps plants maintain more stable growth. Another function of the electric valve is that it can help you save half of the CO2 gas that would otherwise escape when the aquarium is not in use.

The appropriate lighting and CO2 duration for the aquarium depends on the size, number of plants, and the level of algae control in the tank. The suitable duration is about 10-12 hours per day.
