Challenges:

  • Costs

This is one of the concerns for most people starting to transition to aquascaping. Switching to aquascaping requires a larger budget to make your aquarium beautiful. This includes necessary upgrades such as:

– Glass tank: When you start aquascaping, having a glass aquarium with hidden silicone seams is something we highly recommend because a tank with hidden seams will showcase the beauty of the aquascaping world without being obstructed by anything else. However, this is not mandatory. The cost of such a glass tank is usually much higher than a regular tank of the same volume due to the need for thicker glass and higher quality, clearer glass.

– Upgrading the filtration system: Unlike the filtration system for ornamental fish tanks, the filtration system for aquascaping not only filters physically, meaning it removes debris and waste, but also provides biological filtration, using beneficial bacteria to eliminate odors and break down substances that are difficult to filter physically.

– Upgrading the lighting system: Besides simple lighting as in ornamental fish tanks, aquascaping requires a more standardized lighting system to ensure that plants and the natural environment in the tank can thrive.

– Aquascaping materials: In addition to the basic conditions required for aquascaping, hobbyists also need to provide other conditions for the tank such as CO2, substrate, nutrients, temperature…

Although the cost of each individual item is not too high, to achieve the beauty seen in videos or images on the internet, a fully equipped aquascape is necessary. Therefore, this is also a consideration when participating. From our personal perspective, we recommend gradually purchasing and completing your setup to experience and understand their functions.

  • Aquascaping knowledge:

– When engaging in aquascaping, you need to have a basic understanding of biology. This is because what you are caring for this time is not just fish, but an entire ecosystem including plants, fish, substrate, beneficial bacteria,… Therefore, maintaining balance while caring for it is also an important issue to keep in mind.

  • Passion:

– Perhaps this is the most challenging aspect that we believe will be a barrier for newcomers to the world of aquascaping. Many hobbyists initially come to aquascaping for its beauty. However, after some time, due to a lack of sufficient passion, they may neglect the tank, leading to a decline in its appearance. As a result, they quickly abandon this art form.

Advantages

  • Fishkeeping knowledge:

– The first thing we notice in these hobbyists is their knowledge of fishkeeping. With experience in caring for fish, they are quite familiar with aquascaping from the start, resulting in healthier fish that breed easily.

  • Aquascaping perspective:

– With experience from keeping fish and setting up layouts in fish tanks, their aquascaping perspective is very good. Therefore, when newcomers transition to aquascaping, they tend to achieve higher accuracy in layout creation.

  • Better problem-solving skills:

– Due to their existing experience in keeping ornamental fish, they can easily resolve arising issues. Common problems in aquascaping include water quality, fish diseases, or issues with accompanying equipment.

Despite the many challenges, if you are truly passionate about this aquascaping hobby, don’t hesitate. Give it a try and fall in love with it!
