Fish Gasping in a CO₂ Planted Tank
Fish piping at the surface in a high-tech tank is often too much CO₂ or too little O₂—not automatically disease. Kill the gas, add air, then read the drop checker. Still test ammonia so you don’t miss a chemistry emergency.

- Gasping
- CO₂ overdose
- Drop checker
- O₂ crash
What you’re seeing
All fish at the film, rapid gill movement, shrimp climbing out. Worse after lights-on CO₂ ramp or overnight with sealed lids.
| Pattern | Likely driver |
|---|---|
| Drop checker yellow/lime, fish piping | CO₂ overdose |
| Gasping only lights-off | O₂ crash / CO₂ left on |
| Gasping + NH₃ > 0 | Ammonia first |
| White salt spots too | Also check ich |
Likely causes (ranked)
Injected CO₂ too high
Blood CO₂ rises; fish surface for O₂-rich film.
Quick test: Checker lime/yellow; bubble count jumped.
CO₂ left on after lights-out
Plants stop consuming; gas accumulates.
Quick test: Solenoid schedule wrong—see <a href="https://aquaplantshub.com/planted-tank-co2-system-guide/">CO₂ system guide</a>.
Leak or unstable needle valve
Sudden dumps. Check <a href="https://aquaplantshub.com/co2-aquarium-leak-check/">leak check</a>.
Quick test: Hiss at fittings; gauge drops overnight.
Ammonia / nitrite mimicking gasp
Gills burn for a different reason.
Quick test: Liquid test toxic—follow chemistry playbooks.
Fix order
-
Step 1
Emergency: gas off + air on
Close CO₂, open surface agitation / air stone. Lift the lid. Do not chase fish with nets.
-
Step 2
Test water while they recover
NH₃/NO₂ first. If clean, trust the gas story. Read drop checker colors.
-
Step 3
Retune injection
Aim green checker after 1–2h lights-on. Fix leaks (leak guide). Timer: CO₂ off 1h before lights-out.
- Step 4 Rule out lookalikes
When to escalate
- Drop checker stuck wrong → color meaning.
- Can’t find pressure loss → leak check.
- Ammonia positive → ammonia spike.
- System design refresh → CO₂ system guide.

FAQ
Should I water-change during a CO₂ overdose?
Air off the gas first. A WC helps if you also spiked nutrients—but agitation is the priority.
Is yellow drop checker always bad?
Lime/yellow with piping fish = turn down now. Brief flashes while tuning can happen.
Can low O₂ happen without CO₂?
Yes—power outage, sealed lid, high temp. Still treat as oxygen emergency.
Shrimp climbing glass?
Same gas stress. Cut CO₂; don’t dose copper “cures.”
Related to filter flow?
Strong surface ripple helps off-gas CO₂—see flow guide.
Ich vs gasping?
Ich adds white spots. Pure gas crisis usually has no salt dots—still skim ich if spots appear.
