Aquarium Snail Infestation: Cut the Food
A snail “infestation” is usually a food surplus advertisement, not an invasion from nowhere. Starve the leftovers, remove adults, then decide on assassin snails—don’t nuke plants with copper. Keep shrimp safe; copper also ties back to bad ich treatment habits.

- Pest snails
- Overfeeding
- Assassin
- Manual removal
What you’re seeing
Glass covered in bladder/ramshorn overnight; eggs on plants; filter intakes crawling. Plants mostly fine unless Malaysian trumpets dig constantly.
| Pattern | Likely driver |
|---|---|
| Boom after heavy feeding | Leftover food / decaying plants |
| Boom after new plants | Hitchhiker eggs |
| Only trumpets in sand | Detritus in substrate |
| Want algae eaters instead | Add intentional nerites (no freshwater babies) |
Likely causes (ranked)
Overfeeding fish and shrimp
Snails convert waste into more snails.
Quick test: Food hits the sand every night.
Dying plant matter / hair algae cleanup lag
Soft tissue is free calories. Related: too much light.
Quick test: Melting stems left in place.
Hitchhikers on new plants
One egg cluster seeds the tank.
Quick test: No bleach/alum dip on new flora.
Copper “snail bombs”
Kills shrimp and can crash biofilter; temporary win only.
Quick test: You poured snail killer with Neocaridina present.
Fix order
-
Step 1
Cut food 40–50% for two weeks
Feed what fish finish in 1–2 minutes. Shrimp still get biofilm—don’t starve them into color loss.
-
Step 2
Manual removal + traps
Lettuce trap at night, crush eggs on glass, vacuum mulm. Export biomass every WC.
-
Step 3
Add assassins only if you accept predation
Read assassin care. They won’t erase a food surplus alone. Nerites clean algae without breeding in FW.
-
Step 4
Fix the scape drivers
Trim melt, balance light, keep nitrate reasonable (high nitrate guide). Never copper with shrimp.
When to escalate
- Shrimp dying after treatments → WC / chemistry deaths.
- Want intentional algae crew → nerite care.
- Ammonia from mass crush → ammonia spike.
- Fish disease meds temptation → ich shrimp-safe.

FAQ
Are pest snails bad for plants?
Mostly cosmetic. They eat soft melt and leftover food more than healthy leaves.
Will assassins eat nerites?
They can attack other snails when hungry—stock thoughtfully.
Bleach dip plants?
Very dilute, short dips—rinse well. Quarantine plants when possible.
Crush snails in tank?
Small numbers OK; mass crush spikes ammonia—remove bodies.
Copper snail killer with shrimp?
No. Expect shrimp wipeout.
Link to fin rot?
Overfeeding drives both snail booms and poor water that invites fin rot.
