Cherry Shrimp Losing Color: Fix the Fade

Pale cherry shrimp are usually stressed or underfed pigments—not an instant death sentence. Fix water stability and diet before buying “color enhancers.” If they die in hours after a change, switch to the WC death playbook.

What you’re seeing

Reds wash to pink/clear; shrimp still active. Sometimes only after lights-on or when scared (temporary). Chronic fade across the colony is the problem.

Whole colony pale, still grazingDiet / biofilm gap
Pale + hiding after loud WCStress / parameter swing
Babies clear, adults OKGenetics / grade mix
Pale then deaths same day as WCWC shock

Likely causes (ranked)

1

Poor diet / no biofilm

Color needs carotenoids and constant grazing.

Quick test: Only flake scraps; bare glass, no mulm film.

2

Chronic stress (flow, fish, light)

Shrimp bleach when threatened. See flow and fish mates.

Quick test: Bettas hunting; spray bar blasting; lights too long—too much light.

3

Unstable GH or mild WC swings

Not always lethal, but pigments stall.

Quick test: Parameters yo-yo weekly.

4

Low-grade genetics mixing

Wild-type genes dilute red over generations.

Quick test: You mixed cheap mixed-color stock.

Fix order

  1. Step 1 Confirm they’re not crashing

Active + eating = color project. Side-lying after WC = death protocol.

  2. Step 2 Stabilize water and reduce stress

Match WC params, soften flow, add moss/plant cover. Review care baseline.

  3. Step 3 Feed for pigment + biofilm

Quality shrimp food, blanched veg, let a thin biofilm develop. Avoid copper algaecides that “clean” the glass bare.

  4. Step 4 Sort genetics long-term

Cull clear breeders if you want deep red. Snail overpopulation from extra food → snail control.

FAQ

Do color foods work overnight?

No. Expect weeks of stable conditions plus diet.

Is clear shrimp sick?

Not always—genetics and temporary stress bleach exist. Watch appetite and molts.

Can CO₂ bleach shrimp?

Extreme gas stress hurts everyone—see gasping guide—but mild planted CO₂ rarely fades color alone.

Should I dose vitamins?

Food and biofilm beat random bottles.

Lights washing out color?

Very bright tanks can make shrimp look washed; trim photoperiod—related to too much light.

Link to fin rot meds?

Copper meds kill shrimp; survivors may look wrecked. Never share display copper with ich treatment.
