- Medium light
- Pet-safer

Overview
Calatheas are sold as “pet safe statement plants,” then fail in dry AC air on fluoridated tap water. Fix environment before fertiliser.
Easier first plants: spider plant, pothos, ZZ. Related triage: drooping, yellow leaves, how often to water. Pests (spider mites love dry calathea): pest guide.
Care steps
-
Step 1
Medium light, no scorch
North/east window or a few feet back from south. Crispy bleached patches = too much sun.
-
Step 2
Even moisture, not mud
Water when the top 2 cm starts to dry. Use a meter. Never leave the pot in stagnant water.
-
Step 3
Filtered, rain, or distilled water
If tips brown chronically on tap, switch water. Flush salts monthly.
-
Step 4
Raise humidity honestly
Group plants, use a humidifier, or a bright bathroom with a window. Pebble trays alone rarely fix crisping.
-
Step 5
Watch for spider mites
Speckled leaves + fine webbing in dry rooms. Isolate and treat early.
Common problems
Leaves curling inward
Why: Thirst, low humidity, or heat.
Fix: Water if mix is dry; raise humidity; move off the vent.
Crispy brown edges
Why: Dry air or bad water.
Fix: Humidity + filtered water; trim only dead tissue.
Yellow leaves + wet mix
Why: Overwater.
Fix: Improve drainage; lengthen intervals. See overwatering guide.
Faded patterns
Why: Too much light or nutrient stress.
Fix: Dial light back; don’t overfeed.
Companions & placement
- With peace lily: both like even moisture — peace lily is still toxic.
- With spider plant: spider is easier and pet-safer for beginners.
- Avoid: calathea as your first plant in a dry heated apartment.

FAQ
Why do calathea leaves curl?
Usually dry mix, low humidity, or heat/AC. Check soil moisture first.
What water is best for calathea?
Filtered, distilled, or rain if your tap causes tip burn.
Are calatheas hard to care for?
Intermediate. Easy if humidity and water quality are good; frustrating if not.
Calathea vs maranta?
Same family habits. Maranta (prayer plant) is often slightly more forgiving.
Do calatheas need misting?
Misting is temporary. A humidifier or naturally humid room works better.
Are calatheas safe for cats?
Many are listed non-toxic, but discourage chewing any houseplant.
