Peace Lily Care Guide — Water, Light, Blooms & Droop

Indoor plant

Peace lily (Spathiphyllum) is the houseplant that faints on purpose. A thirsty plant perks up in hours after a soak. A rotting plant also droops — and more water finishes it.

Overview

Peace lily is thirstier than snake or ZZ, less of a vine than pothos. The skill is reading the droop: floppy but firm roots + dry mix = water. Floppy + sour wet mix + yellow = stop. Use overwater vs underwater and yellow leaves.

First plant? Many people start here because the plant “tells you.” Also compare what to get first and the $50 kit.

Care steps

  1. Step 1 Medium light, not a dark corner

North or east window, or several feet from south. Deep shade = no blooms and weak, floppy growth that you then overwater.

  2. Step 2 Water when it just starts to droop — not after a full collapse every time

Chronic full wilt stresses roots. Aim to water a day before the full faint. Thorough soak, then drain.

  3. Step 3 Airy mix in a pot with a hole

All-purpose + perlite/bark. Peace lily likes even moisture, not a swamp. Empty saucers.

  4. Step 4 Filtered water if tips brown relentlessly

Fluoride/chlorine sensitivity is common. Let tap sit overnight or use filtered. Don’t “fix” tips by watering more.

  5. Step 5 Feed lightly in spring–summer if you want spathes

½ strength every 4–6 weeks. No bloom is usually light, not fertilizer. Cut spent spathes at the base.

Common problems

Chronic droop even after watering

Why: Root rot or a pot with no hole.

Fix: Unpot; trim black roots; fresh mix; brighter spot. See overwatering guide.

Yellow leaves + wet soil

Why: Overwater / low light combo.

Fix: Dry-down, more light. Yellow-leaf guide.

No flowers for years

Why: Too dark, or never matured.

Fix: Brighter indirect light. Fertilizer without light just makes more green.

Brown leaf tips

Why: Salts, dry AC, or tap water.

Fix: Flush monthly; humidity; filtered water. Don’t confuse with underwatering.

Companions & placement

  • Not on the snake/ZZ watering day: peace lily drinks more often.
  • Pothos nearby: similar medium-bright rooms. Pothos care.
  • Pets: very commonly chewed — keep up high.
  • Avoid: direct hot sun (bleaches leaves) and ice-cube watering.

FAQ

Why does my peace lily droop?

Usually thirst — leaves perk in a few hours after a soak. If the mix is already wet and it still droops, suspect rot.

How often should I water a peace lily?

Often weekly in bright rooms, longer in winter. Use droop + finger test, not a calendar.

Is peace lily toxic to cats?

Yes. Oral irritation and vomiting. Not a pet-safe plant.

How do I get peace lily to bloom?

More light first. Then modest fertilizer in the growing season. Dark bathrooms rarely flower.

Should I mist it?

Optional. Better: even moisture in the pot and distance from AC vents. Misting won’t replace a dry root ball.

Peace lily vs pothos for beginners?

Pothos is more neglect-tolerant. Peace lily communicates thirst but punishes both extremes. Read what plant to get first.
