Betta in a Planted Tank: Care Guide
Fish
Bettas (Betta splendens) shine in planted tanks: warm still water, broad leaves to rest on, and no plastic junk. They still need heat, a cycle, and a filter that does not blow them around. A vase is not a habitat.

- 5+ gal
- Heater
- Gentle flow
- Planted cover
Quick facts
| Temp | 24–28 °C (76–82 °F) — heater, not room luck |
|---|---|
| Volume | 5+ gal minimum; 10 gal is easier to stable |
| Filter | Sponge or baffled HOB — low flow |
| pH / GH | 6.5–7.5 typical; stability > exact number |
| Plants | Anubias, fern, crypt, wisteria — soft rest spots |
| Cycle | Fishless before the fish |
| Mates | Usually none; shrimp sometimes; never fancy goldfish |
| Lifespan | 2–4+ years with warm clean water |
Overview
Bettas are labyrinth fish, not “air-only” pets. They still breathe toxins in a vase. Planted 5–10 gal, heater, sponge filter, and a cycle beat any decorative bowl.
Budget start: betta nano under $50. Cycle: fishless vs fish-in. Plants: Anubias · Java fern · wisteria · crypt. Shrimp risk: tank mates.
How to set it up
-
Step 1
Heat and cycle before the fish
Heater to 26 °C-ish. Fishless cycle until ammonia/nitrite are zero. Do not ‘cycle with the betta’ in 2 L.
-
Step 2
Gentle filtration only
Sponge + air valve, or HOB with a baffle. Long fins + strong flow = stress and clamped fins.
-
Step 3
Soft plants, no plastic spikes
Anubias and fern on wood. Crypt/sword for broad rest leaves. Skip cheap plastic plants that tear fins.
-
Step 4
Lid with a small gap
Bettas jump. Leave a tiny air gap for labyrinth breathing.
-
Step 5
Feed quality pellets, not endless flakes
2–3 bites 1–2×/day. Fast one day a week. Uneaten food wrecks a nano faster than a 20-gal.
Common problems
Clamped fins + gasping at surface
Why: Ammonia or too hot/cold.
Fix: Test. Water change. Check heater.
Fin rot / tears
Why: Dirty nano or plastic décor.
Fix: Clean water; remove sharp décor; plants only.
Kills shrimp overnight
Why: Hunting instinct.
Fix: Separate tanks. Some bettas ignore shrimp — do not assume.
Builds bubble nest then sits in a corner
Why: Often normal + boredom/stress.
Fix: Cover, stable temp, low flow. Not automatically sick.
Tank mates (usually solo)
- Best: the betta alone with plants. That is a complete aquascape.
- Maybe: cherry shrimp if the betta is a known ignore-type — still a gamble. Cherry care.
- No: guppies (fins), neon tetras in tiny tanks, goldfish, other bettas.
- Corys: only in 15+ gal with sand and extra heat consideration — usually skip in a 5-gal betta.

FAQ
Is 1 gallon with a plant enough?
No. 5+ gal. Stability and swimming room matter.
Do bettas need a heater in the tropics?
If nights dip below ~24 °C, yes. Stable warmth prevents clamped fins.
Can I keep two males if the tank is planted?
No. They fight. Plants do not cancel territorial war.
Live plants vs silk?
Live is better (nitrates + rest spots). Silk is safer than plastic. Hard plastic is worst.
How often water change?
25–40% weekly in 5–10 gal. Nanos drift fast.
Will Anubias be eaten?
Rarely. Bettas may nibble biofilm, not the leaf.
