Water Wisteria Care Guide (Hygrophila difformis)

Aquatic plant

Water wisteria (Hygrophila difformis) grows broad emersed leaves in the shop and feathery submerged leaves in the tank. That change is not melt. Pinch tops, replant, and it fills a low-tech scape faster than Rotala.

Overview

Wisteria is the stem people succeed with. The leaf shape change after planting is metamorphosis, not death. Treat it like H. polysperma: pinch, replant, thin.

Color stem later: Rotala. Rosettes: sword · crypt · val. Beginner kit: 10 plants · low-tech $150.

How to grow it

  1. Step 1 Expect new leaf shape underwater

Do not rip off every old emersed leaf on day one. Let submersed growth take over.

  2. Step 2 Plant a midground bunch

5–8 stems. Leave room — it gets wide.

  3. Step 3 Pinch before it mats the surface

Surface mats crash light for carpets and crypts.

  4. Step 4 Lean fert 2–3×/week

    Pale new leaves → more N/Fe. Holes → K.

  5. Step 5 Thin woody bottoms

Same as other Hygrophila. Old stems get ugly; restart from tops.

Common problems

Looks melted but stem is firm

Why: Emersed-to-submersed.

Fix: Wait. New feathery leaves from the top.

Lower melt + long internodes

Why: Shade.

Fix: Pinch, more light or shorter stand.

Covered in GSA

Why: Too much light hours.

Fix: 6–7 h; wipe; PO₄ check.

Took over the sword

Why: You did not pinch.

Fix: Hard prune. Swords need overhead light.

Tank mates

  • Betta rest spots: feathery cover without sharp edges — betta.
  • Guppies and neons school through the lanes you leave.
  • Shrimp: excellent. Corys: fine on sand in front.
  • Goldfish: salad. Skip.

FAQ

Is water wisteria the same as garden wisteria?

No. Hygrophila difformis is an aquarium plant, not the woody vine.

Do I need CO₂?

No. It is a low-tech star.

Can I float it?

Yes briefly. It roots everywhere. Plant it for a scape.

Why did shop leaves look different?

Emersed growth. Submersed leaves are more divided.

Good first stem?

Yes — with polysperma. Save Rotala color for when you have light/CO₂.

Safe with shrimp?

Yes. No copper sprays on plants going into a shrimp tank.
