This type of leaf is very common in Vietnam. It is not difficult to find them; however, this is only a tropical plant, so like European Bucephalandra, they often have to import it due to its special benefits!

Terminalia leaves contain several flavonoids (such as kaempferol or quercetin) as well as tannins (like punicalin, punicalagin, tercatin), saponins, and phytosterols, violaxanthin, violeoxanthin, lutein epoxide, and two lutein isomers.

These substances, when dissolved in water, inhibit harmful fungi and ammonia in the tank, helping to enhance the growth of microorganisms, thus cleaning the water and preventing infections for injured fish or limiting white fungus on fish during cold weather.

How to use Terminalia leaves:

  • Choose dry Terminalia leaves or those that have turned brown. Avoid using leaves near dirty areas or those sprayed with pesticides. After bringing them home, make sure to clean them thoroughly and let them dry.
  • The amount of Terminalia leaves to add to the tank depends on the tank’s volume, usually about 1 leaf for every 10-20 liters.
  • When soaking Terminalia leaves, it is advisable to weigh them down with a stone or a branch, as they are lightweight and can easily float.
  • After soaking in the tank for about 1 to 2 days, the leaves will start to release substances, causing the water to turn yellow. We should soak the tank with Terminalia leaves for about a week, then remove about 60-70% of the tank’s water.
  • If the fish are sick or weak, we should soak Terminalia leaves immediately; if you want the fish to have good resistance, you should soak Terminalia leaves regularly about once every 1.5-2 months.
  • Note: Avoid using Terminalia leaves with salt – as it can easily harm the fish!
