Introduction to Origin

Water Lily, also known as Hydrocleys nymphoides, is a flower that is very familiar to those who enjoy water landscapes, ponds, etc. However, few people know that this flower originates from faraway South America. It has gradually become more popular in recent decades. Water Lily belongs to the family Limnocharitaceae. Water Lily is an aquatic plant that grows underwater and can be easily found in any pond, lake, or garden. Perhaps that is why Water Lily has become much closer and more familiar. And flower lovers and plant enthusiasts will certainly not overlook this famous flower.

Characteristics of Water Lily

Stem of Water Lily

Water Lily grows underwater with a creeping stem that can reach about 45cm. The plant develops at a maximum depth of 30-40cm. However, as an aquatic species that prefers water and light, the best conditions for the flower to thrive are in shallow water of about 10-15 cm. Water Lily has a very fast growth rate. Initially, when it is just a small cluster of plants, after a period of care, an entire area of water will be covered in lush green. If you pay close attention, you will notice that the stem of this plant is quite similar to the stems of lotus and water lily in Vietnam.

Leaves of Water Lily

The leaves float or rise above the water surface, oval-shaped with a slightly round form, pointed tips, and heart-shaped bases, symmetrical. What stands out even more in the leaves of this flower is the deep green, glossy color, arranged entirely from the stem cluster. The leaves have horizontal petioles, and the vein pattern resembles that of water hyacinth.

Water Lily Flowers

Water Lily flowers have a diameter of 3-4cm, blooming near the leaf axils. The flowers also have long stems like the leaves, growing solitary on stems of 5-10cm. The petals are pearly white, soft, and as they approach the center, they turn yellow. This adds to the flower’s striking features while maintaining its elegance. The flowers bloom in summer, releasing fragrance under the sun, attracting many insects. Additionally, some Water Lily flowers have a gentle purple hue, contrasting with the brightness of the white flowers.

Physiological Development Environment of the Flower

  • Regarding light: The flower prefers bright light; however, you can also plant it in a lightly shaded area with soft, cool light. On hot sunny days, you should provide some shade to protect the plant from harm and excessive heat, which can lead to the plant drying out.
  • Water: Ensure that the water level covers the roots of the plant for optimal growth. However, you should avoid letting the plant become waterlogged or exposed to unclean water.
  • Temperature: The plant can tolerate a wide temperature range, but the ideal temperature should range from 18-28 degrees Celsius.
  • Fertilizer: Pay attention to periodically fertilizing the plant to supplement nutrients and microorganisms for even and beautiful flowering.
