The type of fish and space requirements usually determine the type of tank you will buy. A standard fish tank has dimensions of 60 × 30 × 30 cm, suitable for small fish like bettas, rasboras,…. When choosing a fish tank, you should determine whether the shape is suitable for the location where you plan to place the tank. Rectangular fish tanks are best for maintaining good water quality and ensuring fish growth. This is because the surface area between air and water is larger, allowing for more efficient gas exchange. Other tanks may function well and look attractive, but you will need to spend more time monitoring and maintaining water quality.
When selecting a tank, consider the shape and behavior of the fish. Long fish like freshwater angelfish will thrive better in taller tanks rather than longer ones. Schooling fish like zebras, neon tetras,… will do better in longer tanks as these provide them with horizontal space to swim.
