How to choose the right product

Wabi-kusa needs high humidity and strong light — pick supplies that balance moisture and airflow.

Moss & soil balls

Moss plus peat/soil wrapped in mesh — base for emersed Hemianthus and Hydrocotyle. Keep 80%+ humidity; mist twice daily when new.

Gel mounting

Agar or wabi-kusa gel holds TC plants on balls. Skip cyanoacrylate — gels retain moisture better for emersed roots.

Clear containers

PET or acrylic boxes with lids — mini terrariums. Drainage holes plus gravel base. Window light or 6–8h grow LEDs.

Emersed lighting

10–20W grow LEDs for small trays — avoid harsh direct sun. Burp lids daily for gas exchange; prevent mold with airflow.

FAQ

How is wabi-kusa different from a submerged tank?
Plants grow emersed in humid balls — no full filtration like aquariums. You still need light, humidity and fresh air exchange.
Which plants suit wabi-kusa?
Hydrocotyle, Hemianthus, Riccia and some Crypts transition easily. Monte Carlo TC also works on moist balls.
White mold on the ball?
Poor airflow or excess misting — vent the container, mist less, add gentle circulation. Trim moldy sections; avoid fungicides on edible setups.
Can I move wabi-kusa into an aquarium?
Yes — trim and plant submerged; allow 1–2 weeks acclimation. Emersed leaves differ from underwater growth — normal during transition.
