How to choose the right product

Medication is a last resort — heat and quarantine often beat dosing display tanks for mild ich.

API General Cure

Praziquantel plus metronidazole for internal parasites and hexamita. Dose per label; usually quarantine-only due to filter impact. Not shrimp-safe.

Seachem Paraguard

Buffered formaldehyde/malachite green for ich, fungus and external lesions. Can treat display tanks at low dose; remove carbon during treatment.

Ich without meds

Raise temp to 28–30°C plus low salt if species tolerate — works for mild ich. Increase aeration at higher temperatures.

Planted & shrimp

Most fish meds are not shrimp-safe — hospital tank sick fish. Dose bacteria supplements after treatment; partial media swap if nitrite spikes.

FAQ

Will General Cure treat ich?
It targets internal parasites primarily — external ich often needs Paraguard or heat/salt. Match medicine to symptoms.
Does Paraguard kill filter bacteria?
It can — monitor ammonia and nitrite during treatment. Add bacteria supplements and avoid replacing all bio media at once.
Can I medicate a shrimp tank?
Not recommended — move sick fish to quarantine. Shrimp are sensitive to formaldehyde and copper.
How long until meds clear the tank?
Varies by product — often 3–7 days plus carbon afterward. Retest water before reintroducing sensitive shrimp or plants.
