How to choose the right product

Natural hides and leaves often outperform gimmicky chemicals — source matters for tank safety.

Shrimp hides

Cholla tubes, ceramic caves and drilled wood — shelter and breeding caves. Two to three hides per 40L; rinse before use.

Catappa leaves

Mild tannins and antibacterial film — one leaf per 40–60L, replace when soft. Alder cones for nanos. Not a substitute for water changes.

Shrimp nets

Fine stainless or soft plastic mesh for transfers and culls. Pre-soak nets; work quickly — do not leave shrimp trapped long.

Tests & safety

Stable oxygen matters — airline clips and check valves help. Avoid rusty metal décor; 304 stainless is aquarium-safe long term.

FAQ

Are hides required for shrimp tanks?
Not mandatory but strongly recommended — less stress, safer molts and fry cover. Moss plus Cholla often suffices.
Will catappa tint the water?
Slightly — many shrimp prefer mild tannins. Remove soft leaves; use carbon briefly only if you want crystal clarity.
Do nets stress shrimp?
Only during transfers — catch quickly into matched water. Avoid keeping shrimp in nets beyond 10–15 minutes.
Are plastic hides safe?
Choose aquarium-rated, odor-free plastics. Natural ceramic and Cholla remain popular over unknown bargain plastics.
