Flame Moss Care Guide (Taxiphyllum)
Aquatic plant
Flame moss (Taxiphyllum sp. ‘Flame’) sends fronds upward like a green torch. It is slower than Java moss, different from hanging Christmas moss, and not the flat pads of Fissidens. Attach to wood or stone; give gentle flow and low–medium light.

- Moss
- Upward fronds
- Low–medium light
- Not Christmas / Java
Quick facts
| Light | Low–medium; high PAR → algae in clump |
|---|---|
| CO₂ | Optional |
| Temp | 18–26 °C |
| Attach | Gel, thread, or mesh on vertical wood |
| Look | Upward ‘flame’ tips when healthy |
| vs Christmas | Christmas hangs down; flame points up |
| vs Java | Java mats everywhere; flame is directional |
| vs Fissidens | Fissidens flat and slow; flame vertical |
Overview
Shops mix up every green moss. Flame moss (Taxiphyllum) grows up. Christmas moss drapes down. Java moss tangles in all directions. Fissidens sits in flat fern pads. Pick flame when you want a vertical accent on a branch — not a hanging tree or a wall mat.
Attach like Anubias / Java fern. Low-tech OK: beginner plants · budget nano. Triangle at low dose: light/CO₂/fert.
Grow the torch look
-
Step 1
Attach to vertical wood or stone
Horizontal placement hides the flame. Use gel dots on dry hardscape; loose thread if needed.
-
Step 2
Low–medium light on the clump
It greens in shade of stems. Blasting PAR grows GSA on the tips.
-
Step 3
Gentle flow through the fronds
Dead spots collect mulm and hair algae. A small ripple is enough.
-
Step 4
Trim the silhouette, not into dust
Scissor the outer flame shape monthly. Rinse mulm when you trim.
-
Step 5
Stable water — no KH whiplash
Moss hates sudden chemistry swings. Match temperature on water changes.
Common problems
Tips brown and stop growing
Why: Too much light or air-dried during rescape.
Fix: Lower PAR; keep submerged; wait for base regrowth.
Flat mat instead of flames
Why: Laid on the substrate or too little light.
Fix: Reattach vertically on a branch.
Hair algae inside the clump
Why: High light + organic film.
Fix: Shorten photoperiod; more flow; shrimp pick.
Falls off after a week
Why: Glue on wet slime or thread too loose.
Fix: Dry-patch gel; mesh bag for 7 days.

FAQ
Is flame moss the same as Christmas moss?
No. Christmas (Vesicularia) hangs down. Flame (Taxiphyllum) grows upward like a torch.
Flame vs Java moss?
Java is faster and mats in every direction. Flame is slower and vertical.
Do I need CO₂?
No. Optional for slightly faster tips.
Can I carpet the floor with flame moss?
You can, but you waste the silhouette. Use Monte Carlo or hairgrass for lawns.
How long until it looks full?
Often 2–3 months. Slower than Java moss.
Safe with shrimp?
Yes. One of the best shrimp moss textures if flow is gentle.
