In remote areas or for students with a limited budget, it can be difficult to find the substrate they desire. Below, we would like to introduce you to some mixed substrate recipes.
1. VQT’s substrate (TSO):
- Two parts of crushed charcoal (broken and washed)
- One part well-composted manure
- One part clay
- Add enough microbial powder according to the amount of water in the tank
2. Net423’s substrate (TSO):
- Clean soil
- Earthworm manure
- Long-fermented microorganisms (the author did not specify the ratio and dosage)
3. Hibox’s substrate (TSO):
- 4kg earthworm manure
- 10kg Tribat (clean soil used for growing vegetables)
- 1kg DBO
- 10kg construction sand
- 20kg egg gravel
- 3kg powdered clay
- 10kg pumice
4. Antiloving’s substrate (TSO)
- 20kg alluvial soil
- 2kg earthworm manure
5. Self-mixed substrate for 8x-9x (Aquabird.com.vn)
Divided into 2 layers
Bottom layer:
- 5kg tribat (clean soil used for growing vegetables)
- 5kg construction sand
- 5kg powdered clay
- 1.5kg earthworm manure
- 0.5kg tracatu (to create microorganisms)
- 0.5kg rice husk ash
Top layer:
- Tribut clean soil + construction sand (ratio 1:1)
6. Tien13378’s substrate (TSO)
- Any type of clean soil (tribat…)
- Microbial fertilizer (any brand)
- Agricultural fertilizer (<100g)
- Construction clay
- Mixed gravel: combine all ingredients, gradually add clay until it feels slightly sticky, then stop.
7. ddhuans’s substrate (TSO)
- 100g small fish (anchovies)
- 100g shrimp
- 500 VND straw
- 1000 VND earthworm
8. hovaten’s substrate (Aquabird.com.vn)
- 4 packs of DBO
- 20kg clean sand (washed)
- 20kg large gravel
- 20kg small gravel
- 3kg microbial fertilizer (tracatu)
Steps to set the substrate
- Mix 4 packs of DBO + 3kg microbial fertilizer + 3kg large gravel with water until the mixture feels slightly sticky to the touch.
- Cut a 5cm border around the bottom
- Create a 3cm sand border around the mixed substrate
- Create a 2cm gravel base hugging the glass surface
- Spread sand over the entire mixed substrate about 1.5cm thick
- Spread another 2cm of small gravel
- Finally, add 2-3cm of large gravel
9. anhcoyeuhabuon’s substrate (Aquabird)
- 1.5 packs of tracatu
- 1 cup of clay
- black sand (equal to the amount of tracatu)
10. columb’s substrate (Aquabird.com.vn)
- Silt dredged from the bottom of the field
- Clay for making bricks
- Fine sand
- Large and medium gravel
Put in the tank in the order: silt -> set soil -> sand -> gravel (ratio from top to bottom: 1-2-2-5) –> Soak the tank for 2 days for stabilization before planting
11. Thelonelywarrior’s substrate (Aquabird.com.vn)
- Tribut clean soil (any amount)
- 500g DBO
- 1kg Tracatu
- Yellow gravel
- Fine sand
- Pumice (the type that is yellow and easily broken)
- Herbal residue
Mixing method: spread herbal residue as the bottom layer, then add the mixture of DBO + TRACATU + TRIBAT + crushed stone + fine sand + gravel (at least 3cm thick)
12. Qtreo’s substrate (TSO-Aquabird.com.vn)
- 20kg earthworm manure – 1kg well-composted cow manure (can be replaced with 200g duck manure or 150g chicken manure)
- 1kg coal
- 1kg clay
- 5kg basalt red soil
- Microorganisms: use organic microbial powder (read the instructions carefully on the packaging)
- Molasses: 5 teaspoons
Formula 2: Peat + earthworm manure: ratio 2:1____Each substrate mixing formula above yields different types of substrates with various advantages and disadvantages (mainly affecting two factors: plant color and usage duration)
Depending on individual conditions, choose the most suitable formula for yourself. Specifically, for formula number 5, our aquascaping team has tried it with quite promising results; the plants grew robustly and quickly, with one tank still thriving after 2 years.
