The starling and things not to be missed

The myna is one of the cutest and most popular bird species in Vietnam. With its distinctive features and personality, the myna always attracts the attention of many bird lovers. In this article, we will explore the myna and the essential things to consider when raising mynas.

Origin

The myna belongs to the order Passeriformes with many different species. They typically inhabit tropical areas such as Southeast Asia. According to scientists, mynas are believed to have appeared on Earth about 10 million years ago. However, information about the origin and evolution of this bird species is still not well understood.

Physical Characteristics

  • The myna is a small bird, measuring about 10 – 12.5 cm in length and weighing around 9-12 grams.
  • They have dark brown-gray feathers on top and white underneath, with a dark brown spot on the crown.
  • A distinctive feature of the myna is its short legs, straight beak, and short tail. They also have very short wings, making them appear somewhat plump and round.

Habitat

Mynas have a rich and diverse habitat, preferring tropical regions. They mainly live in mangrove forests, deciduous forests, pine forests, dense forests, scrub areas, and sparse shrub areas. In Vietnam, they are mostly found in the Central South region, with very few in the Northern region.

Reproduction of the Myna

The breeding season for this bird occurs from April to June each year. Male mynas will create melodies to attract females. Once the male and female have established a partnership, the male will provide food for the female and care for the nest to attract and keep the partner.

Mynas typically lay 2-7 eggs per clutch. The incubation period lasts from 12-15 days and is the responsibility of the female. Newly hatched mynas are weak and completely dependent on their parents for nourishment and protection. The chicks will need about 2-3 weeks to grow enough to fly and leave the nest.

Some Criteria for Choosing a Good Myna Breed

Appearance

Each breed of myna has a different shape; you should choose mynas with the following appearance:

  • Head: small and elongated, with a slender beak, as these are considered intelligent birds that learn to sing quite quickly.
  • Eyes: the most beautiful mynas will have yellow, pomegranate-like eyes; followed by red, and finally brown.
  • Tail: choose a bird with a large, long, and firm tail.
  • Feet: the feet should have enough claws, be straight, and thick, giving a solid and strong impression.

Singing Voice

According to the experience of long-time bird keepers, mynas will have two tones: Earth and Metal. The Earth tone has a deep singing voice, while the Metal tone is resonant. For true bird enthusiasts, they will be very selective about the singing voice, choosing birds with a blend of Earth and Metal tones, meaning the voice has resonance but also a certain depth. People often hear the singing of this bird like the sound of wind or flowing water.

Posture and Movements

A good myna not only sings well but also exhibits gestures that show health and professionalism, like a performer on stage, through wing flapping, tail fanning, and rhythmic movements. Avoid choosing tired, lethargic mynas with little movement!

Choosing a good myna breed also depends on individual preferences and your purpose for raising birds. Therefore, before deciding to buy a myna, you need to thoroughly research information about this breed to make the right decision and ensure satisfaction in your bird-keeping experience. We hope the insights we have shared can help you choose the best myna breed for yourself.
