Causes of Green Water in the Aquarium

According to the experience of Aqua Plants Hub, when the water in the tank turns green, the cause is the appearance of a type of “algal bloom” (blue-green algae). Its scientific name is Cyanophyta.

Algal blooms are “uninvited guests” that disrupt the aquascaping tank. Algae cling to plant leaves, hindering respiration and affecting plant growth. Typically, newly set up tanks without experience will be covered with a thin layer that gradually thickens.

The main reason is due to the water environment being overloaded with nutrients. Overfeeding fish and small-capacity filters cannot keep up. This leads to water pollution, creating conditions for these organisms to thrive.

Additionally, aquariums with high levels of nitrogen and nitrate also contribute to the growth of these algae. These types of algae are quite dangerous; if they proliferate, they can kill fish and cause oxygen depletion for other organisms. That’s when it’s urgent to address the green aquarium water.

How to Treat Green Water in Aquascaping

1. Clean Algae and Green Algae in the Tank:

First, when you notice the water in the tank turning green, the first thing to do is to clean it immediately by hand. You need a specialized cleaning tool. Then scrape off all the green algae clinging to the tank. Additionally, you can utilize some algae-eating fish (like Goldfish) to help manage the green aquarium water. These fish will assist in cleaning the water environment.

2. Clean the Entire Tank:

In addition to scraping off algae and green algae, cleaning the entire aquarium is also a reasonable method. Prepare a cleaning magnet specifically designed for tanks. Then proceed to clean the tank. Note that you don’t need to over-clean decorative items inside the tank, as these contain beneficial bacteria that are good for the survival and growth of organisms in the tank.

3. Clean the Filter in the Tank:

The filter is an essential component for cleaning the tank water. Currently, there are many different types of filters on the market, such as biological filters, mechanical filters, chemical filters, etc. Each type has its own characteristics, so choose according to your needs!

Biological Filter:

This type of filter helps remove harmful waste such as Ammonia and Nitrite, treating green aquarium water. It is mostly found in fish waste. Additionally, it performs the nitrogen process in the tank, converting Nitrite into Nitrogen.

Mechanical Filter:

This mechanical filter helps clarify the water by removing impurities. It is also a reasonable way to treat green aquarium water. Water from the pump passes through filter pads and retains dirt. You should clean the filter pads regularly.

Chemical Filter:

Carbon chemical filters are the most popular and widely used. These carbon filter pads trap dirty chemicals in tiny pores. They can remove copper, chlorine, antibiotics, and various proteins…

4. Water Change Technique for the Aquarium:

After completing the three steps of scraping, cleaning algae, and treating the filter, changing the water is also part of the method to treat green water in aquascaping. Note that when changing water, you should only remove about 1/3 of the water currently in the tank. Then add new water (that has been settled and dechlorinated).

5. Use Algaecide for the Aquarium:

Currently, there are many types of algaecides available on the market that are safe for aquatic organisms. This type of medication is suitable for use in the morning to treat green aquarium water. Add 0.5cc for every cubic meter of water in the tank. Then, in the afternoon, continue to add 0.5cc for every cubic meter of tank water. After about 2 or 3 days, you will see clearer water. You can continue to use another dose to achieve even clearer water.

Thus, above are all the causes and specific treatment methods that Aqua Plants Hub has suggested for you. We hope it can help you rectify and care for the water environment in your aquarium in the best way!
