Common diseases in birds and how to treat them

Birds are a popular pet species favored for their diversity in shape, color, and song. However, like any other species, birds can also get sick and need proper care to keep them healthy. In this article, we will explore common diseases in birds and how to treat them.

Diarrhea caused by E.coli

Causes: Due to unsuitable food or unsanitary cages.

Signs: Birds have watery droppings, wet feces, and crumbled droppings seen at the bottom of the cage. If the disease is severe, the bird appears weak, stops eating, and is less active and vocal.

Treatment: Administer 1 – 2 mg of Ampicillin; 15ml of water mixed with 25% sugar. Give the bird continuous treatment for 3 days.

Prevention: Regularly clean the cage. Avoid frequently changing the bird’s diet, and do not feed birds watery fruits too often, about once a week, or on hot days.

Flu

Causes: Due to temperature fluctuations, with high temperatures during the day but turning cold at night. Pet birds are often less active, making their resistance weaker and more susceptible to flu.

Signs: Fluffed feathers, lethargy, reduced activity, wheezing breath, gradually decreasing appetite, runny nose, occasional shivering, and dull eyes.

Treatment: Upon first detection, carefully check the condition. If the bird’s feathers are not fluffed and it still preens normally, the illness is not severe. Move the bird’s cage to a warm, draft-free, and well-lit area, maintaining a temperature of about 25°C. Use a cotton swab to clean the runny nose to help with breathing. For severely ill birds, use the antibiotic Chlortetracycline. Crush it and mix it into the food, feeding twice a day for 3 days. If the bird does not eat on its own, mix it into drinking water and slowly administer it to avoid choking. For larger birds, most can recover without medication. You can roast bananas and feed them to the bird. This will help boost their immunity.

Prevention: When newly acquiring a bird, mix antibiotics into their food and drinking water to eliminate pathogens. Supplement with nutrients that support the immune system such as egg yolk, fish meal, and canola oil. When the weather turns cold, move the cage to a sheltered, well-lit, and warm area.

Coccidiosis

Causes: Caused by a single-celled parasite called Eimeria.

Signs: Birds appear lethargic, often sleeping during the day, rapidly losing weight, pale skin and legs due to anemia, fluffed feathers, drooping wings, and abnormal eating. Birds drink a lot of water leading to diarrhea, and as the disease worsens, droppings may be red-brown and contain fresh blood.

Treatment: Coccidiosis is a very common disease in poultry, so there are many types of medications from various domestic and international manufacturers. After detecting the disease, visit the nearest veterinary pharmacy for consultation and guidance on usage. Alternatively, look for imported medications such as Endocox 2.5%, Baycox 2.5%, Cocci-Care…

Prevention: Pathogens in droppings can survive independently, waiting for opportunities to infect other birds. Therefore, it is essential to keep the cage clean and implement disinfection measures, as well as use preventive medications regularly to avoid cross-contamination within the flock.

Glandular inflammation

Causes: Due to injury, infection of the gland, or the bird suffering from sunstroke or cold…

Signs: The bird appears tired, feathers are disheveled, loss of appetite, and the gland is red, swollen, and pus-filled.

Treatment: First, use iodine alcohol to disinfect the gland. Then, use a sterilized needle to puncture the gland and squeeze out all the pus (squeeze until you see fresh blood). Finally, apply iodine alcohol once more to the affected area of the bird.

Prevention: Remove sharp objects in the cage that could injure the bird. Avoid excessively hot or cold environments, and provide nutritious food.

Foot diseases

Causes: Birds kept in cages are often prone to cuts from sharp objects or insect bites leading to infections.

Signs: Pus formation, swelling, and in severe cases, can lead to bone necrosis.

Treatment: Use a sterilized sharp knife to remove pus, then clean the wound with saline solution (also known as isotonic salt) or a 0.1% potassium permanganate solution, and finally apply iodine alcohol and antiseptic ointment.

Prevention: To prevent these diseases in birds, regularly disinfect the cage and check for and remove sharp objects.

Thus, there are many common diseases in pet birds. To treat these diseases, you need to ensure cleanliness for the birds and use appropriate medications and treatment methods. However, preventing these diseases is more important, so you should ensure cleanliness for the birds and provide regular vaccinations. If your bird shows any severe symptoms, take them to a veterinarian for timely diagnosis and treatment.
