Yellowing Aquarium Plant Leaves — Deficiency Decision Tree

Yellow leaves are a pattern problem: old vs new growth, whole-leaf vs interveinal. Map the pattern before dumping random fertilizers.

Mobile vs immobile. N, P, K, Mg move to new growth—symptoms start on old leaves. Fe, Ca, many micros show on new leaves first.

Will yellow tissue re-green? Usually no. Trim and grow new healthy leaves after you correct the cause.

Nitrogen shortage (mobile)

Nitrogen moves to new growth when scarce, so older leaves yellow and may drop while tips keep growing. Common in lean dosing, heavy plant mass, or after large water changes without remacro.

Quick test: Oldest leaves yellow first; overall pale stems; new tips less affected.

Iron / micros (immobile)

Iron does not move from old leaves. New growth turns chlorotic, often between veins, while older leaves stay greener. Soft water and high pH can also lock Fe availability.

Quick test: Young leaves pale/interveinal; old leaves OK; check GH/pH.

Low light / self-shading

Bottom leaves of stem plants yellow and fall when the canopy steals PAR. This is optics, not always a bottle problem.

Quick test: Only floor layer yellow; tops rich green; dense planting.

CO₂ / pH swing stress

Uptake stalls when CO₂ is unstable even if fertilizers are present. Plants look hungry while algae may bloom. Yellowing patterns matter: old leaves vs new leaves point to different mobile vs immobile nutrient stories. One bottle of “complete” fertilizer rarely fixes every yellow leaf overnight.

Quick test: pH swing often >0.5–1.0 across the photoperiod with injection.

Fix order

  1. Step 1 Map old vs new leaves

    Old-first → raise N/macros carefully. New-first interveinal → Fe/micros + check GH/KH. Pinholes → potassium guide, not more iron.

  2. Step 2 Stabilize light & CO₂

    Same photoperiod 6–8h. Fix large pH swings before heavy dosing so you can read the result.

  3. Step 3 Change one variable for 7–10 days

    Add N or Fe—not five products at once. Typical starting points: follow label on a nitrogen additive or iron supplement; reassess new leaves only.

  4. Step 4 Trim hopeless yellow tissue

    Yellow necrotic tissue rarely recovers. Free energy for new growth after the cause is corrected.

    Map the pattern: Old-leaf yellow with green veins often suggests mobile nutrient issues (commonly nitrogen or magnesium stories). New-leaf yellow/pale may implicate iron or related micronutrient delivery—especially at higher pH.

    Rule-outs: Check lighting age, CO₂ stability, and whether roots are planted firmly before chasing every deficiency label.
