Stem Plants Leggy / Losing Lower Leaves
Bald lower stems are usually self-shading + no trim cycle, not a mystery disease. Tops reach light, bottoms drop leaves. Fix with regular topping, replanting heads, and even PAR—see Rotala rotundifolia care for a typical stem.

What you’re seeing
Healthy crowns, leafless “sticks” below, internodes stretching toward the lamp. Different from melt (tissue goes transparent) and from pinholes on old leaves.
| Pattern | Likely driver |
|---|---|
| Bald bottom, lush tops | Self-shading / no topping |
| Whole stem pale + tiny new leaves | Stunt / CO₂ |
| Lower leaves yellow then drop | Also check yellowing |
| Only one dark corner bald | Local shade from hardscape |
Likely causes (ranked)
No trim / replant cycle
Stems 30cm+ shade their own bases. Leaves drop where PAR is near zero.
Quick test: Last top was months ago; forest of sticks.
Light too high and narrow
A hotspot at the surface, dark at the substrate.
Quick test: Tops pearling, bottoms in shadow.
CO₂ too low for the height
Tall stems need stable carbon all the way down the canopy.
Quick test: Drop checker yellow at the sand even if green at the top.
Planted as one dense wall
Air can’t move; lower leaves rot off.
Quick test: No sway between stems; debris trapped.
Fix order
-
Step 1
Top and replant the heads
Cut 8–12cm healthy tops, replant them in the front/mid. Discard or compost leafless sticks. This is the actual “fix,” not a spray.
-
Step 2
Open the bush
Leave finger-width gaps so light and flow hit lower nodes. Don’t replant as one brick.
-
Step 3
Even out PAR + CO₂
Raise/widen the fixture; keep a green checker. Use the LED calculator if the lamp sits too high.
-
Step 4
Set a 2–3 week trim rhythm
Rotala/Hygro want regular topping. KPI = leaves remaining on the lower third after two cycles.
When to escalate
- New tops also tiny → stunted growth.
- Red stems going green → red plants turning green.
- Pinholes on remaining lower leaves → K / pinholes.
- Rotala species page → R. rotundifolia.

FAQ
Will lower leaves grow back on the bald stick?
Almost never. Replant the top; the old cane is a leftover.
Is this potassium deficiency?
K usually makes pinholes, not a clean leafless cane. Still check pinholes if holes are present.
How often should I trim Rotala?
Every 2–3 weeks in a growing tank. Waiting until it hits the waterline guarantees bald bases.
Can I just raise the light?
Raising without topping still shades the bottom. Top first, then even PAR.
Do floating plants cause bald stems?
Yes if they cover most of the surface. Thin floaters so stems still get light.
Should I switch to low-light plants?
Only if you refuse a trim cycle. Hygro/Rotala want cutting; Anubias doesn’t.
