This article is dedicated to those who specialize in collecting driftwood from the forest! As for purchased driftwood, most sellers have already processed it for you!
Before we guide you on how to process driftwood, you should first check if your driftwood can be used in an aquarium:
- Your driftwood is from a tree that does not have sap.
- It is non-toxic.
- The branches are not brittle.
- Typically, trees growing along riverbanks are quite suitable for driftwood.
- It’s best to avoid using driftwood from unknown tree species.
There are many ways to process aquarium driftwood, and today we would like to guide you through some simple methods:
- Soak the driftwood in water for a few months to leach out the color! Note that you should change the water frequently.
- Boil – this method works well for small pieces of driftwood, but for larger pieces, you will need a big pot. Be sure to add salt while cooking to kill bacteria!
- If you live near rivers or streams, you can soak the driftwood there; just make sure to tie it down or secure it! This method is quite effective as it not only removes the color but also allows the flowing water to gift it with a natural layer of hair algae.
Above are the basic methods we introduce to you! If you feel you don’t have enough time, purchasing driftwood is also an option.
Wishing you success.
