Fungus Gnats in Houseplant Soil — How to Get Rid of Them
Learn guide
Tiny black flies when you water are fungus gnats, not fruit flies. They breed in wet peat. Dry the top of the pot; do not fog the leaves and hope.

- Wet peat
- Sticky traps
- Dry top 2–3 cm
- Meter in the core
Quick facts
| Adults | Small dark flies hopping off the soil when you water |
|---|---|
| Larvae | In the wet top layer — that is the real problem |
| Cause | Peat that never dries + overwatering |
| Not the same as | Fruit flies on kitchen scrap |
| Snake / ZZ | Gnats = you are watering too often |
| Peace lily | Can want moisture without a swamp surface |
| Traps | Yellow sticky cards catch adults only |
| Cure | Dry surface + less frequent deep water |
Overview
Fungus gnats are a moisture problem wearing insect clothing. Adults are annoying; larvae chew tender roots in wet peat. Insect spray on leaves does not reach larvae. Change how you water.

Get-rid-of order
-
Step 1
Let the top 2–3 cm dry between waters
This kills the nursery for larvae. A moisture meter in the core tells you the root ball is not bone-dry yet.
-
Step 2
Stick yellow cards at soil level
Catch adults so they stop laying. Replace when covered. Traps without dry soil fail.
-
Step 3
Water from below occasionally
Set the pot in a tray 10–15 minutes, then drain. Keeps the surface drier than a full top soak every time.
-
Step 4
Switch peat for airy mix if it stays wet a week
Amend with bark + perlite or repot. Terracotta helps. See potting-mix guide.
-
Step 5
Do not “treat” with constant ice cubes or cinnamon only
Cinnamon is not a plan. Ice cubes underwater the core and still keep a wet crust for gnats.
Common problems
Traps full but flies return
Why: Surface still wet.
Fix: Longer dry-down. Check cachepot water.
Plant wilts when you try to dry it
Why: Peace lily or small peat pot.
Fix: Bottom-water, then drain. Do not return to weekly top soaks.
Gnats + mushy stem
Why: Rot has started.
Fix: Unpot. Follow root-rot rescue.
Only one pot has gnats
Why: That pot never dries.
Fix: Fix that pot; still check neighbors.
Plants that invite gnats
- Peace lily in peat: surface stays wet. Care.
- Pothos / monstera supermarket pots: dense peat. Repot to chunky mix.
- Snake / ZZ: gnats mean the schedule is wrong. Snake · ZZ.
- Low-light shelf: soil dries slower — low-light setup.

FAQ
Are fungus gnats harmful?
Adults are mostly annoying. Larvae can weaken seedlings and rotting plants. The wet mix is the bigger threat.
Do sticky traps alone work?
They lower adults. Without a dry surface, eggs continue.
Is hydrogen peroxide a drench useful?
A dilute drench can knock larvae once. It does not replace drying the mix.
Should I discard the soil?
If it stays wet a week or smells sour, yes. Otherwise dry-down + amend.
Will a grow light help?
Brighter light dries pots faster. Useful on a dim shelf. See grow-light guide.
Pet-safe?
Sticky traps away from cats. Prefer cultural control over random foggers.
