Best Pond Filters for Goldfish & Koi (2026)

Learn guide

If the pond goes pea-soup green or smells, the filter is undersized — not “the fish are dirty.” Size mechanical + biological volume for the pond liters, then add UV only if green water remains.

Quick facts

TurnoverFull pond volume about every 1–2 hours
PressurizedBuried, multi-chamber, easy to hose-clean; good for small–mid ponds
Waterfall / boxGravity return, huge bio surface, louder, needs height
UV clarifierClears green water; does not replace solids handling
Goldfish pondCan be smaller than koi; still no “tub + sponge only” long-term
KoiHigh waste — oversize filter, settlement chamber first
WinterKeep bio-media wet and aerated; do not scrub 100% of bacteria
SkipAquarium HOBs, fountain pumps with no media, “no filter natural pond” with 20 koi

Overview

Indoor goldfish tanks use sponges. Outdoor ponds need settlement + bio-media + flow. Pressurized filters suit compact gardens. Waterfall boxes suit larger koi ponds with a height drop. UV is a clarifier, not a license to overstock.

Commons/comets outgrow indoor tanks — that is why this page exists. Fancy goldfish listing indoors is a diet issue: swim bladder. Cycle any new pond section before dumping fish: same ammonia rules as fishless cycling.

How to choose

  1. Step 1 Measure liters, not “it looks small”

Length × width × average depth. Filters are sold for max liters in easy conditions — derate 30–50% for koi.

  2. Step 2 Pick pressurized vs waterfall by layout

No height? Pressurized + return jets. Have a wall? Waterfall box looks better and holds more media.

  3. Step 3 Mechanical first, then bio

Foam / brushes catch sludge. Then ceramic / matting for bacteria. A UV after solids, not before a dirty pad.

  4. Step 4 Size the pump to the filter, not the fountain look

Head height kills flow. Read the pump curve. Aim for 1–2 h turnover at the real height.

  5. Step 5 Clean pads, not the whole bio pile

Rinse mechanical in pond water. Leave bio-media. If green water remains after solids are handled, add/replace UV bulbs yearly.

Common problems

Pea-soup green, fish OK

Why: Algae + undersized UV or too much sun/nutrient.

Fix: More plants, shade, UV, less feed. Check turnover.

Filter clogs every 3 days

Why: Too small mechanical stage or overfeeding.

Fix: Settlement chamber / pre-filter. Feed less.

Fish gasping after a big clean

Why: You sterilized the bio.

Fix: Never wash all media in tap. Stagger cleaning.

Tiny canister on a 2,000 L tub

Why: Aquarium gear on pond bioload.

Fix: Replace with a pond-rated pressurized or box filter.

Indoor vs pond goldfish

  • Fancy indoors: 20+ gal, sponge filter — under-$100 setup.
  • Commons / comets: pond or huge tank. This filter page is for them.
  • Koi: oversize everything. They are not “big goldfish in a barrel.”
  • Do not dump pea puffers or shrimp into a pond filter sump.

FAQ

Is a UV clarifier required?

No. It helps green water. It does not eat fish waste. Size mechanical + bio first.

Can I use a waterfall filter on a small goldfish pond?

Yes if you have height. Otherwise pressurized is tidier.

How often do I clean?

Mechanical weekly–biweekly in summer. Bio rarely. UV bulb yearly.

Will plants replace a filter?

Plants help nutrients. They do not replace settlement for koi pellets.

Can I run the pond without a pump in winter?

In mild climates some people slow flow. Keep oxygen. Do not let bio media dry.

What size for 1,000 L goldfish?

Look at filters rated 1,500–2,000 L and a pump that still turns the pond over in 1–2 h after head loss.
