Strong light with near-zero phosphate is a common planted-tank pattern; also CO₂/light mismatch.

How do I know I’m improving without lab gear?

Photograph the same corner weekly and score none / light / moderate / heavy. One step down = improve. That score is what the matrix thresholds use.

Should I start with an algaecide if the tank looks bad?

No. Match an ID path, spend the Manual + Balance window in the matrix, then promote only when the threshold says so.
