High-demand types (extra depth)
Green water, BBA, and hair algae drive most planted-tank searches. These three get fuller fix ladders and clearer escalation rules. Less common forms are shorter cards below.

Green water (free-floating bloom)
Pea-soup water · plankton in the water column
A sudden surplus of light + dissolved nutrients with weak plant competition—classic after big water changes, overfeeding, or early unstable setups. Treating the water with endless large water changes often re-feeds the bloom.
- Days 0–3: Full blackout (opaque cover), pause feeding, keep aeration/filter running for oxygen.
- Days 4–7: Resume a short photoperiod (6h). Cut feeding. Avoid >30–40% water changes every day “to clear green.”
- If water is still visibly green after one completed blackout + 7 days of discipline: add a UV sterilizer sized to your flow (bypass preferred) and run continuously until clear, then as maintenance.
- Escalate only if UV + blackout fail twice: review stocking/feeding and whether an unlabeled “algae killer” is even aquarium-safe—most planted tanks do better without broad algaecides.

Black beard / brush algae (BBA)
Dark tufts on wood, Anubias edges, filter outlets · red algae group

- Day 0: Prune worst leaves; remove heavily coated hardscape if needed. Photograph one outlet / wood corner as your baseline.
- Days 1–7 — Balance first: If you inject CO₂, start gas before lights (commonly ~60 minutes), keep bubble rate / drop-checker color stable across the photoperiod, and stop mid-day “needle-valve fiddling.” Clean filter media. Even out flow so one corner is not blasted while another is dead.
- Days 7–14 — Spot treat only if coverage is still moderate/heavy on the baseline photo: liquid carbon (glutaraldehyde-type) or careful 3% H₂O₂ on hardscape with filter paused briefly—never a livestock soak.
- Escalate: Repeated whole-tank algaecide baths are a last resort and often the wrong tool in shrimp tanks. Prefer another Balance pass (CO₂ timer, diffuser clean, organics) before chemical escalate.

Hair / thread algae
Long green strands in plants and open water

- Manual remove (toothbrush / wind on a stick) and siphon loose strands.
- Cut photoperiod to 6–7 hours for 7–10 days; plant fast-growing stems into empty midground.

Brown diatoms
Dusty brown film — classic new tank
Immature system + available silicates/light; usually fades as the tank matures.
- Wipe glass; don’t scrub obsessively daily.
- Finish cycling; modest light; nerites/otos if appropriate.
- Escalate chemically? Almost never—wait 2–4 weeks of maturation first.

Green spot algae (GSA)
Hard discs on glass & Anubias
Strong light with near-zero phosphate is a common planted-tank pattern; also CO₂/light mismatch.
- Scrape glass; prune worst leaves.
- If a liquid kit shows PO₄ near zero under strong light, dose modestly and retest in 3–4 days.
- Escalate chemically? Rarely—fix Balance first for a full week after the first PO₄ correction.

Cyanobacteria (blue-green mats)
Slimy sheets · often earthy smell
Low-flow pockets + organics; sometimes very low nitrate.
- Siphon mats; aim flow across substrate.
- 3-day blackout + clean organics; test NO₃.
- Escalate to specialty treatments only after ID is certain and Balance fails across 7 days.

Cladophora
Coarse cotton / branching mats
Chronic excess light + nutrients with weak plant competition.

- Lower light; increase plant mass for 10–14 days.

Green dust & short fuzz
Soft film on glass · peach-fuzz edges
Early tank / mild light excess.
- Let a thin film mature, then clean once thoroughly.

Staghorn algae
Antler branching on edges
Same stress pattern family as BBA (CO₂ instability, organics, flow hotspots).

Root-cause map (field framework)
Algae and cyanobacteria win when plant growth cannot keep up with light. Use this map to pick which dial to turn—not as a claim that every outbreak has a single lab-proven cause.

Hours + intensity set demand. Too much for your plant mass → filaments and green dust.
Carbon (CO₂)

Nutrients

Beginner trap
Huge daily water changes on green water often re-feed free-floating cells. Diagnose first—especially green water and new-tank diatoms.

What is a Twinstar-class electrolyzer?

It is a low-voltage electrode unit that sits in the aquarium and runs a continuous, gentle electrolysis of the water—splitting water at two metal plates (anode / cathode) so reactive species form near the electrodes and circulate with the flow.
Twinstar is a brand of commercial units hobbyists use for this job. Similar products (often nicknamed “Doctor” bars) follow the same idea: a powered sterilizer/inhibitor bar, not a bottle of algaecide and not a UV lamp.
As ongoing pressure against soft green films and some hair/fuzz growth while plants grow. Makers and hobby reports describe oxidant/reductant activity that makes leaf surfaces less friendly to algae. It does not scrape BBA off wood by itself and does not clear true green-water plankton the way UV does.
How the principle works (short version)

Livestock notes

Broad “algae killer” chemicals first?
