Bird budget setup
Beginner Budgie Setup Under $100 (Honest BOM)
Ornamental bird
A first budgie setup can stay near $100 if you buy a wide cage, pellets, a cuttlebone, and two foraging toys — and you skip the painted round cage and the $40 swing set.

- Under $100
- Budgie BOM
- Width > height
- Pellets first

Overview
$100 is tight in 2026. The honest split: most of the money goes to the cage. Food and calcium are cheap. Toys are cheap. A second budgie and an avian wellness exam are not inside this BOM — budget them next.
Read budgie care before the store trip. If you are still choosing species, use what bird to get first. Print the toxic foods list on the fridge.
Used cages from rescues are fine if you disinfect (bird-safe cleaner, full dry) and verify bar spacing. Never use a cage that held a sick bird without guidance.
Setup steps
-
Step 1
Cage first — measure width and bar spacing
Target at least 18 inches (45 cm) wide, 1/2 inch bars, rectangular. Place away from the kitchen and direct sun. A simple grate + paper liner beats deep gravel (which hides rot).
-
Step 2
Perches: mixed diameter, not one plastic dowel
Include at least one natural wood perch. Keep food cups away from the poop zone under the favorite roost. Skip sandpaper covers that grate feet.
-
Step 3
Food station: pellets + water + cuttlebone
Open the pellet bag the day the bird comes home (mix with the diet it already knows). Clip cuttlebone. Change water daily. Seed millet is for training, not the only bowl.
-
Step 4
Two toys, rotated weekly
One shreddable, one foraging. That is enough on day one. A mirror can increase hormonal screaming in some budgies — watch behavior.
-
Step 5
Quarantine and sleep schedule
If you have other birds, quarantine 30 days. Cover for 10–12 hours. Book an avian vet wellness exam as soon as you can — it will blow the $100 cap and it is still the right order.
Common problems
Cage ate the whole budget so you bought seed-only
Why: Seed is cheaper at checkout and expensive in vet bills later.
Fix: A small pellet bag still fits under $100 with a used cage. Prioritize pellets over a third toy.
Round / pagoda cage on sale
Why: Looks cute, wastes horizontal flight space, hard to clean.
Fix: Return it. Flight-style rectangles are the welfare buy.
No money left for a vet visit
Why: BOM under $100 never included medical.
Fix: Save before a second bird or a fancy gym. An exam after purchase is part of responsible keeping.
Impulse second budgie on day three
Why: Introduction stress + doubled food + possible disease.
Fix: Quarantine rules still apply. Read budgie companions section before pairing.
What this BOM does not include
- The bird itself (prices vary wildly by source).
- Avian vet exam and any medication.
- A second budgie and a larger pair cage.
- Cockatiel-sized housing — see cockatiel care if that is your species.

FAQ
Can I really set up a budgie for under $100?
Yes if the cage is modest/used and you skip gyms. The bird + vet are extra.
What bar spacing do budgies need?
1/2 inch (about 12 mm). Tighter is OK; much wider risks head entrapment.
Is a used cage safe?
If disinfected and the right size/spacing, yes. Avoid unknown illness history when possible.
Should the first toy be a mirror?
Not as the only enrichment. Some budgies obsess. Start with shreddable + foraging.
When should I add a second budgie?
After quarantine knowledge, a larger cage, and a stable diet. Not on day one of a $100 single-bird BOM.
Does this setup work for cockatiels?
No — cockatiels need a wider, often more expensive cage. Use the cockatiel care guide instead.
