How to choose the right product

An effective aquascaping toolkit centers on five core tools.

Curved vs straight scissors

Curved scissors reach foreground and carpets; straight scissors suit stems in open areas. Both help if you trim weekly.

Long tweezers & sand flattener

10–12″ tweezers plant deep without disturbing substrate. Flatteners reshape slopes after water changes; scrapers clean glass and leaves.

304 vs 316 stainless

304 is fine for freshwater. 316 resists corrosion better if tools stay wet. Avoid unmarked steel — it can rust.

Pro vs starter kit

Budget 5-piece sets suit beginners. Upgrade individual tools (ADA/Chihiros scissors) as trimming volume grows.

FAQ

Curved or straight scissors first?
Curved scissors are more versatile for aquascapes — carpets and hidden zones. Straight scissors complement stem work up top.
Is 304 stainless enough?
Yes — 304 is common and durable if dried after use. 316 is premium but not required for beginners.
Is a 5-piece set enough to start?
Yes — curved/straight scissors, tweezers, flattener and scraper cover 90% of planted tank maintenance.
Separate tweezers for shrimp?
No — aquascaping tweezers work fine. Avoid kitchen carbon steel tools (rust and metal contamination).
