Best Aquarium Water Conditioners (2026)

46 Updated Jul 31, 2026 1 min read Aqua Plants Hub
Tap water carries chlorine or chloramine; RO water lacks minerals. Both need treatment before they hit your tank. We compare Prime and Safe dechlorinators, GH/KH remineralizers and a practical prep routine for planted tanks and shrimp.

How to choose the right product

Know when you need dechlorination vs remineralization to avoid water-change shock.

Prime vs Safe

Prime neutralizes chlorine/chloramine and temporarily binds ammonia — ideal for large changes. Safe is cheaper and chlorine-focused — fine for many municipal taps without chloramine.

GH/KH & RO water

RO/DI strips minerals — add Equilibrium, GH booster or remineralizer. Test TDS/GH after mixing; Caridina shrimp need tighter stability than Neocaridina.

Water-change workflow

Dose conditioner in new water before adding to the tank. Match temperature within 1–2°C. Avoid 30–50%+ weekly changes unless emergency.

Common mistakes

Do not blindly double Prime doses. Do not skip remineralization on RO shrimp tanks. Retest pH/GH after mixing.

FAQ

Do I need Prime every water change?
Yes — any new tap water needs chlorine/chloramine removal. Dose per label; Prime also helps during temporary ammonia spikes after large changes.
Is Equilibrium required for RO planted tanks?
Recommended — RO lacks Ca/Mg. Equilibrium restores GH; add KH separately depending on shrimp species and pH targets.
Can Safe replace Prime?
For chlorine-only tap water, Safe works and costs less. Choose Prime for chloramine, large changes or ammonia concerns.
Do conditioners affect fertilizers?
Dechlorinators have minimal impact on dosing. Avoid mixing conditioners with medications — follow each product label.
