How to choose the right product

Moss species differ in growth form and attachment speed — match to your layout skill level.

Java moss

Tough, grows anywhere — shrimp tank and beginner default. Tie or gel-glue to wood/stone; trim regularly so fragments do not clog filters.

Fissidens fontanus

Fine leaf, deep green — stunning on Iwagumi stone. Wants good light and gentle flow; CO2 helps density. Mount thin and wait for hold.

Weeping moss

Draping branches — Dutch and nature focal accents. Needs more care than Java; keep free of hair algae and debris.

Mounting tips

Stainless mesh or thin thread for carpets. Use gel glue sparingly. Never bury moss in substrate — it rots. Trim with aquascaping scissors.

FAQ

Does moss need CO2?
Java moss does not require it. Fissidens and Weeping look fuller with CO2 and stronger light — low-tech still works slowly.
Why is my moss brown or yellow?
Low light, algae coating or excessive flow. Slightly raise PAR, gently remove algae, trim dead patches for regrowth.
Tissue culture or loose moss?
Both work — TC is shrimp-clean. Loose moss costs less; rinse well before mounting. Quarantine unknown sources.
Can moss clog filters?
Yes without trimming — fragments follow flow into intakes. Use pre-filter sponges and schedule trims.
