Staghorn Cholla Cactus Wood - Cholla Wood - Aquascape & Planted Tank Guide
Cholla wood has the following benefits: - Releases tannins that help shrimp reduce stress, boost immunity, kill bacteria, and improve digestion. - Has acidic properties that slightly lower pH in water and soften water. - The fibrous structure increases biofilm, which is a favorite food for shrimp, especially baby shrimp. Additionally, shrimp can also eat the wood fibers to supplement their fiber intake. - Cholla wood contains no harmful components.

How to choose the right product

Pick wood for branch shape, tannin tolerance and how fast it stays submerged.

Spider / Red Moor

Twiggy, dramatic branches — nature and Dutch focal points. Moderate tannins; soak or weight until waterlogged.

Mopani

Dense two-tone blocks — heavy, sinks faster. Strong initial tannins; great for biotopes and blackwater-friendly stock.

Cholla

Hollow tubes — shrimp and pleco tunnels. Lightweight and floaty; tie to stone. Excellent for nano shrimp tanks.

Soak & plant

Soak with water changes until submerged. Gel glue or thread for moss/Anubias — never bury roots in wood. Temporary carbon if tannins are too heavy.

FAQ

How long should I soak new wood?
Days to weeks depending on species. Mopani and Spider often take longer. Fully submerged wood is ready for long-term scaping.
Are tannins harmful?
Tannins tint water and slightly lower pH — fine for many fish and shrimp. Monitor TDS/pH for Caridina; use carbon briefly if you need clarity.
What if wood keeps floating?
Tie to inert stone, glue to hardscape or extend soaking. Cholla is light — plan permanent anchors.
Should I boil driftwood?
Optional — boiling releases tannins faster but is not required. Rinse and soak works for most aquascaping wood.
