How to choose the right product

Estimate room heat load first — chillers cost more but beat fans when temperature swings are large.

Active chillers

Teco, Active Aqua, Hailea — stable 4–8°F drops. Size HP by volume and target ΔT. Some need dedicated pumps; others integrate flow.

Fan coolers

Clip-on fans increase evaporation — 2–4°F cheaper and efficient. Less effective in humid rooms; insufficient for hot Discus setups.

Sizing HP

15-gallon tanks often need 1/10–1/8 HP; 30–50 gallon may need 1/6–1/4 HP depending on room heat. Oversize slightly vs running at 100% duty.

Install & maintenance

Chillers need airflow and periodic coil cleaning. Use a digital thermometer — avoid >2°C daily swings that stress fish.

FAQ

Do planted tanks need chillers?
Depends on species and room — Neocaridina tolerate warmth. Discus, some temperate fish and sunlit rooms benefit from cooling.
Are fans enough instead of chillers?
In cool rooms with 2–3°F targets, often yes. Above 86°F ambient or 75–78°F targets usually need a chiller.
Are chillers expensive to run?
Higher draw than fans — right-size HP, insulate tanks and reduce solar heat gain near windows.
Does cooling affect CO2?
Cooler water holds CO2 better — you may reduce injection slightly. Re-check drop checker after temperature stabilizes.
