How to choose the right product

Match bacteria products to tank stage — new setup, maintenance or post-medication recovery.

Stability vs Quick Start

Stability (Seachem) supports daily dosing during setup or after media changes. Quick Start (API) adds nitrifying bacteria fast — classic fishless/fish-in cycling aid.

Planted tank cycling

Cycle with ammonia or hardy stock after 1–2 weeks of bacteria + testing. Plant early — plants absorb ammonia and reduce nitrate buildup.

Test kits required

Bacteria supplements do not replace ammonia/nitrite tests. Daily checks until both read zero before sensitive fish or Caridina shrimp.

After medications

Antibiotics wipe filter bacteria — dose higher for several weeks and add bio media. Never replace all bio media at once.

FAQ

Do new tanks need bacteria starter?
Recommended — shortens cycling and reduces ammonia/nitrite spikes. Run filtration 24/7, stable temperature and test regularly.
Is Stability safe for shrimp?
Yes at label doses. Do not add livestock while ammonia or nitrite remains elevated, even with supplements.
How long does cycling take?
Typically 2–6 weeks depending on method and temperature. Bacteria, plants and good filtration can shorten this if tests stay clean.
Can bacteria replace filter media?
No — liquids seed bacteria; Matrix/ceramics provide long-term housing. You need both.
