How to choose the right product

Identify algae type first — each responds to different light, CO2 and dosing fixes.

Excel & liquid carbon

Excel (dilute glutaraldehyde) helps hair algae and moss — spot or daily dosing per label. Not a CO2 replacement; overdosing stresses fish and shrimp.

AlgExit & algaecides

AlgExit and similar products for outbreaks — reduce light, increase filtration, cut feeding. Avoid during shrimp stress or sensitive species.

Prevention first

Stable CO2, consistent water changes, avoid excess phosphate/nitrate. Healthy plant mass shades the substrate — fewer BBA and diatom issues.

Physical tools

Stainless scrapers, mag floats, gravel vacs — remove algae mechanically before chemicals. Clean filters during green-water events.

FAQ

Can Excel replace CO2?
No — Excel is a supplemental carbon source, insufficient for high-tech demands. Useful in low-tech setups or light spot treatments.
Is brown algae normal on new tanks?
Common in weeks 2–4 (diatoms). Shorten photoperiod, add fast growers, wait — it often clears as the tank matures.
Is AlgExit shrimp-safe?
At label doses with extra aeration. Caridina are more sensitive — consider isolation, lower doses and close monitoring.
Should I add algae-eating fish?
Otocinclus and Amano shrimp help mild algae — they will not fix green water or severe BBA. Balance nutrients and light regardless.
